Top Ten Reasons to Buy a Smaller Car

In the last decade, there’s been a big increase in the amount of drivers choosing small cars over bigger, more expensive models. So why are so many people choosing to buy small cars? Here’s the top 10 reasons why you should buy a smaller car this year.

Use less petrol

The price of petrol has increased massively over the last few years, making it harder to afford to keep a car going on the road. Save money on the cost of running your car by choosing a small, efficient car rather than a massive ‘gas guzzler’.

Better for the environment

Since they use less fuel, smaller cars emit less CO2 into our atmosphere. Large cars are one of the major contributors to pollution around the world, damaging our already depleting Ozone layer. They also pose a threat to the air we breathe, filling it with harmful nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Cheap road tax

Smaller cars are now charged less for road tax because they emit less CO2 into the air. Some small cars now even produce less than 120g of CO2 per km, which means you won’t have to pay any road tax at all.

Easier to manoeuvre

Small cars are easier to manoeuvre around corners, down tight roads and past other vehicles. We all took driving lessons in small cars because they are so easy to manoeuvre, so it makes sense to buy a car similar to what we have the most experience with.

Easier to find a parking spot

There seems to be more and more cars on the road but fewer places to park your car. Take opportunity to easily fit your small car into those spaces that bigger road cars have to drive past.

More reliable

Smaller cars are well known for being more reliable, simply because there are fewer things inside them to go wrong. Make sure you consider this when buying a car and not when you’re broken down on the roadside.

Cheaper to repair

Even when things do inevitably go wrong, replacement parts for small cars are often a lot cheaper than for larger models. The simplicity of how a small car is built means that they’re quicker to fix too, meaning less hours spent in the garage.

Cheap insurance

Insurers take many of the benefits of owning a small car listed above into consideration when calculating a quote. Engine size is a huge factor in the cost of your car insurance, and small cars also get better quotes for being more reliable, efficient and cheaper to repair.

Stylish and technical

In the past, small cars have been known to lack stylish interior detail and technology in the dashboard. But in this modern age small cars can now be installed with all the gadgets you want, and people often think they’re now more stylish than big, bulky cars.

Surprisingly spacious

By their description it’s obvious that small cars will have less space inside, but you may be surprised how much you can fit into them. Their boots have enough space for your weekly shop and the seats can fold flat for the times you need extra room.

Rudest and Most Polite Drivers Revealed

White van drivers are the rudest on the road according to MoneySupermarket. The price comparison company surveyed 2,500 motorists about their driving habits and general behaviours in order to make this deduction.

Ford drivers turned out to be the most polite but were followed closely by Audi drivers who took a surprising second place on the list.

Rudest motorists

Amazingly none of the white van drivers surveyed claimed that they always comply with the rules of the road when it comes to indicating at roundabouts; compared to 71% of Mazda drivers. Range Rover drivers also scored poorly in this area, with just 21% of those surveyed claiming to be completely law abiding.

None of the white van drivers surveyed let people out of junctions on a regular basis, and they also don’t seem to have any respect for cyclists; with 75% of them stating that they don’t make provisions to given them enough room when passing them. Despite all of this, 50% of white van drivers consider themselves to be courteous and polite with other motorists.
However, in there defence they are relatively courteous when it comes to pedestrians, with almost half of the white van drivers surveyed claiming that they always stop for pedestrians at zebra crossings.

They are also one of the least likely groups to suffer from road rage. This honour goes to Jaguar drivers, with 40% of those surveyed claiming that they regularly get angry and utilise hand gestures against other drivers.

Most polite motorists

Ford drivers are one of the most likely to let people out of junctions and also one of the least likely groups to cut up other motorists. They are also one of the least likely groups to follow other drivers too closely on the motorway; obeying the DVLA’s recommended two second rule.

It appears that parking is another Ford driver strength, with only 7% of them claiming that they regularly park without consideration for other drivers (i.e. over 2 spaces or in a dangerous location etc.). This compares to 50% of Jaguar owners.

Unlike White van drivers, Ford owners also act with considerable consideration towards cyclists; with 85% claiming that they always leave sufficient space when passing them and only 6% claiming that they will happily drive through a puddle in order to splash them. Audi drivers were the most likely to be guilty of this violation, but still managed to finish in second place having scored well in other areas.

However, Ford drivers are less considerate when it comes to pedestrians; with an alarming 66% of the Ford drivers questioned stating that they never stop at zebra crossings.

MoneySupermarket.com spokesman Peter Harrison commented: “Few people can claim to be a model driver all the time and this survey shows which car drivers are closer to being perfect than others.”
‘’Whether it’s letting people out at junctions, speeding through changing traffic lights or refusing to indicate correctly; other drivers notice these things. These results show we really associate bad driving habits with different makes of car.”

Looking After Your Car – Maintaining and Preventing Scratches

Nothing is worse than buying a new car and then suddenly noticing an ugly scratch that you don’t even understand how you got! Scratches can really lessen the visual appeal of any motor and can make them look flawed and unkempt no matter how nice of a car you have. Even the smallest scratches somehow manage to become eyesores as they ruin the paintwork and smoothness of your cars texture and appearance. Of course, other than the visual aspects of this, scratches can also lessen the value of your car so it is worth understanding how to both prevent scratches and maintain them in order to maximise the value of your vehicle and prevent it from looking less than perfect.

 Preventing Bodywork Scratches

In preventing scratches and maintaining car paint, stick to one basic rule – drive and park as carefully as possible! Park well away from other cars when possible, and if not, be always on the alert for potential scratches. It is also advisable to park away from shops and buildings if you can. Also try to avoid unpaved roads as these can shoot out loose pebbles and stones which can scratch paintwork.

Maintaining Those Annoying Scratches

If and when you do scratch your automobile, PaintTouchUp states that ”there are many things you can do yourself to cover up the imperfections and shallow scratches. Touch up paint kits are widely available and can be quite easily applied to most shallow scratches even if you have never attempted it before”. They will fill in the gap and blend in with the rest of the colour provided you have managed to pick the most suitable shade. Also don’t through it away when you’re done – keep any leftover paint for future scratches. The scratch you have already touched up may also need tweaking in the future so keep any remnants safely around for a car touch up. Deeper or more aggressive scratches may need the attention of a professional as may require more than a simple paint touch up.

Getting your vehicle scratched is almost an inevitable event. But knowing how to prevent it by careful driving and parking can really help to avoid it happening. It is also worth remembering that scratches are not the end of the world – they can quite easily be maintained using the right car touch up paint. These kits are relatively inexpensive and are a really worthwhile investment in order to maintain both the visual appeal and value of your car.

Work greener: How solar panels can help firms reduce their carbon emissions

By the year 2030, electric vehicles will account for 20 per cent of the entire car market, according to research from analysts at IHS Global Insight. However, within the fleet sector, where cost is king and performance and reliability take precedence over size and style, you could reasonably expect that figure to be much larger.

Companies have long been aware of the environmental benefits of reducing the carbon output of their cars, but the way in which this translates to cost savings is really starting to sink in. Not only do companies have to spend less on fuel and diesel – the prices of which having now reached record levels – but the government has, in its bid to reduce carbon emissions, reduced the road tax levy for vehicles which emit less carbon.

Interest in hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius and all-electric models such as the Nissan LEAF is blossoming, and in the technology that surrounds them. Getting experts from the likes of Evo Energy to install solar technology involves an up-front fee, but really should be seen a long-term investment. Red Dwarf actor and green enthusiast Robert Llewellyn says his roof-mounted solar cells provide 85 per cent of the electricity he needs for his LEAF; getting the rest from the National Grid costs him a little over £5 for a 1,000-mile journey.

Fleet managers are also keenly aware of the benefits, especially as the technology develops. The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association estimates that when the new Chevrolet Volt and Vauxhall Ampera reach the UK market, 80 per cent of them could end up as company cars. Meanwhile, the government is also looking to persuade firms to switch to low-carbon motoring, offering discounts on the purchase price of low-carbon vehicles through the Plug-in Car Grant. This provides a 25 per cent reduction of the purchase price – up to a value of £5,000 – when buying an eligible low-carbon model.

While the performance of contemporary solar panels cannot – yet – completely power a car using cells placed on the vehicle’s roof, designers are looking at how this system can improve the economy of hybrid vehicles. For now though, using electric and hybrid vehicles and installing solar panels to generate renewable electricity to power them is a viable way for fleet managers to cut back on their costs. It does involve a bit of planning, but the latest IHS report lays these out clearly and further highlights the potential savings that companies can make.
